Purpose

Educate participants on the requirements of PREA Administrative Investigations outlined by the PREA Standards and Department protocols including, steps of an investigation, interviewing skills, and documentation.

Participants will:

  • Review PREA laws, policies & procedures; they will be able to define sexual abuse, sexual harassment & staff sexual misconduct;
  • Know Montana DOC’s Investigative Protocols and will demonstrate practice interviewing and questioning skills required for PREA Investigations; and
  • Complete a PREA Summary Report and build a PREA Case File.

Who Should Attend:  Employees responsible for PREA administrative investigations.  Must have approval of direct supervisor & chain of command and DOC PREA Coordinator.  Registration cut-off is 16 participants.

Purpose

Educate participants on the Prison Rape Elimination Act so they can demonstrate a competent and professional approach when applying the Prison & Jail Standards as outlined by the Department of Justice.

Participants will:

  • Review the PREA directives
    • Zero tolerance of sexual abuse/sexual harassment
    • The dynamics of sexual abuse/sexual harassment in confinement
    • Inmates’ rights to be free of sexual harassment in a confinement setting & freedom from retaliation for reporting incidents
  • Define prevention, detection and reporting of incidents, as well as the proper response when notified of an incident
  • Be able to apply knowledge of LGBTI and gender non-conforming inmates and residents to achieve better communication

Course Objectives:

Students will review and discuss updated Taser Inc information

Students will demonstrate proper handling and shot placement

Students will demonstrate deploying a Taser into a target

Dress: Duty dress & gear including Ballistic Vest. No firearms, ammunition or chemical agents. Must bring safety/shooting glasses

Safety: All Tasers & Cartridges must be checked in with Instructors before class starts

Other Gear: If you are not from Montana State Probation & Parole, you must bring a Taser Device and at least 2 cartridges.

Pre-Requisite: Must have completed a full Taser End User Course.
